In this thread, I ask stuff and you help me.

Today's question is about mid-air dodging.

How do I do it more better?

For example, I played a guy on wi-fi today who would use tiny fast characters, toss/knock me into the air, then do other stuff to hit me. I would try to air-dodge the obvious upcoming hit after I got knocked into the air, but the dodge only would execute after the next hit(s).

So what's my problem? Am I forgetting some hitstun thing? Is there a timing issue?

You can airdodge anytime after you get hit; there's like zero hitstun. (There is hitstun, just very little)

The simplest answer is to fast fall and airdodge. The weakness here is that it's easy to be grabbed as soon as you land.

If you fall and use an aerial, you can also be shielded and attacked when you land with lag from laggy aerials, and just grabbed from faster aerials.

The best strategy (well especially in Melee lol) is to jump away; if you need to, jump away offstage. You may have played my Samus and watched me bomb offstage where you'd have no stage to fall on if you tried to chase me; I'd rely on recovery to get back onstage but it would save me the trouble of trying to airdodge through crap on wifi. This is not the best idea versus Metaknight all the time.

This is harder with Link, a fast faller with bad recovery. Seriously, Link has the most ridiculously bad recovery in the game, so this is stupid.

Anyway, yeah, I'd double jump pull out a bomb, use that to land.

Another trick is drifting one way while falling, then b reversaling to go the other direction away from where your opponent might be trying to follow you; the technique is in my stickied thread here.

Ask more questions, I might have missed a few but I am decent at Smash theorycraft

input lag/delay. do what del said(dj, pull bomb), unless jumping away will do more harm(losing stage position/advantage) than ff airdodging and taking some hits to retain stage position. you're link so yeah.

as far as dodging in general goes chalk most of it up to prediction rather than reaction(perfect shielding, etc cause of wifi), jump away unless you're unable to get out of range, shield, airdodge, then spotdodge(/sidestep)/roll would be last.

thought you quit? stop playing link.

He kept up throwing me into Thunder and I couldn't mid-air it. After the Thunder hit I'd see Link in the little magnifying class do a dodge right before I Starred.

;_; I'm doing something wrong.

Yeah, you can definitely dodge out of uthrow before he uses thunder.

Just DI the uthrow away and fastfall down/airdodge and don't drop on him because you're asking for punishment.
