Alright, it seems the interest is there so I am going to get an official sign ups list started.
Multi-Mafia is, as the name implies, a game with multiple, relatively equal factions instead of the "small informed minority mafia vs uninformed majority town" dynamic that most of you are used to seeing.
I have played multiple faction mafia on that other site that I visit so much, but I am assuming that most of you here have not, so I will outline the basics here.
Game Outline
Note: This adaptation will be very similar to smogon's viva la real time mafia. I originally intended to be more experimental and make a more original game, but I think it is best to get ETC into this style of play before trying that first.
Players: 17-20
First of all, there will be 4 standard Team Factions, starting with two players each. They are this game's "mafia". 1 player will be the designated team leader, who will be able to recruit players who are not aligned with a faction, called Freelancers. On nights that the leader does not recruit, he is able to inspect another user's role or alliance. A maximum of four players ca be on each team at any time, and a maximum of three recruits overall. In addition, not counting Night 0, the faction leader may attempt to recruit twice every four nights. The other starting member of the faction is a personal bodyguard, who can protect the leader from all night actions as long as he is alive. This will ensure that the leaders will be able to communicate with the other players in public without compromising their survival. At any time, a faction may also delegate one of its members to kill another player twice every four nights. A faction wins when their team becomes the last surviving players of the game.
Let us talk a little more about the Freelancers. These players are merely the ones who are not initially aligned with any of the four teams. Their objective is to get recruited by one of the team leaders. However it is very possible that some freelancers may not end up recruited at all. In this case, then they can only win if they are the only surviving player at the end of the game. Every freelancer has a unique role, ranging from the roles found in standard mafia games to other more specialized ones. Every player who isn't aligned with a faction at the beginning of the game is a freelancer, with one exception.
That exception is the Neutral, also called the wolf or the serial killer in other games. He will appear as a Freelancer when inspected and can pretend to be recruited into each faction. I will not reveal his win condition, but several possibilities exist. For instance, it could involve being recruited into all four factions. It could be killing every player until he is the last player standing. Sometimes he can even create his own, smaller faction. Anything is possible, as there are many variations.
Now, for the important question, what happens if one player is recruited by multiple people in the same night? This is where the ranking system comes in. At the beginning of each night with the exception of night 0, I will inform each leader the rank of their faction on a scale of 1 to 4. This is primarily based off of how many players they have alive and a few other undisclosed factors. The main purpose of the rank system is to determine who gets recruited in this type of situation, and thus the faction with the lowest rank has highest priority recruitments.
Now that I have explained the game specific rules, I will go ahead and remind you of the general ones which you should be familiar with, with the exception of the communication rule, of course.
Rules:
GOLDEN RULE: Outside of thread communication is allowed and strongly encouraged! For whatever reason you guys seem to avoid this format in your games and on the rare instance it is allowed you struggle to deal with it properly. I will include a brief strategy guide at the end of this post to give you some tips. In addition, this rule implies that role claiming is in fact allowed.
1. The game will be split into Day and Night phases, lasting 24 hours each. However, since outside communication is critical, I may extend the deadlines.
2. The first phase will be Night 0. During this phase, killing will not be allowed (though recruitments are, and they do not count towards the two nights restriction). It will also be longer than the other phases to give the players time to organize and talk (48 hours).
3. Almost every player has a night role as stated in their role PM. Your night PM's should be titled with "Night X - ACTION USER", where X is the night number. The ACTION USER part varies based on your role.
4. During the Day phase, everyone may vote as a group to publicly lynch another player by posting Lynch USER or Vote USER in the thread. To vote for no lynch, just post no lynch.
5. When you are dead, you may not talk to other players, with the exception of your teammates. You are not allowed to reveal any new information you have gained while you have been dead in this case, but it is ok to talk about strategy.
6. Screenshots are not allowed. However, it is perfectly ok to copy and paste logs between you and the other players as well as myself. You may even falsify them if you wish.
7. Don't sign up if you aren't willing to be committed for a long period of time. This is a relatively slow game, and will require a lot of outside communication for you to succeed. To test you on this fact, your sign up post must contain an apostrophe (').
8. With respect to the above rule, make sure you have a reliable method with communicating to the other players privately, be it PM, AIM, or what not. The option that I recommend the most is using ETC's IRC Chat, as there is a link on the board index, and it is the easiest way to communicate with multiple people at once. The Chat needs more people in it anyway!
Everything else should be common sense rules.
Strategy Guide:
This is optional reading, but I strongly recommend that you take the time to do so if you are going to play, because the first time I played a game like this I performed rather poorly as I lacked the proper guidance.
- Firstly, especially in games like this, it is very easy to lie. It is almost outright encouraged. If you are in a pinch, integrate lying into your strategy!
- The leaders, being immune to night actions and all, should publicly state that they are still recruiting. If the freelancers don't know about you, then they won't tell you anything!
- Freelancers should make it their responsibility to contact a person claiming a leader as soon as possible. However, they should take caution. A clever player can lie about being a faction leader. Likewise, a freelancer can lie about not being recruited to gain more information from the leaders.
- Never give up too much information to anyone (except your teammates when recruited).
- Of course, if you trust that the person you are talking to is a faction leader in need of recruits, then you should tell him your role. You will need to convince the leader in question that you are worth the recruit over the other freelancers somehow, even if you have a lie. Remember, once you are recruited, you are a permanent member of the team regardless.
- Once the initial stage of recruiting all the freelancers is over, your focus should be maintaining a favorable balance of power. This is where diplomatic skills come in, so once again outside communication is important!
- And thus, the day phase is very important! The lynch is a perfect opportunity to test your diplomatic skills. Use it well!
I know that's quite a mouthful. I will only host this game if I get at least 17 people. If you read everything above, then sign up below. I will update the sign ups list periodically, adding only players that I am sure have read everything.
