And in decks alone I have roughly 600 dollars worth of cards. Adding in my playset/trade binder I have about seven or eight hundred dollars worth of plum now. This scares me cause I've built this up in a little over a year since my last collection was stolen.

Anyone else ever do this, and how much did you come up with?

Oh, and fun fact is roughly 300 of that is in -one- deck.

I have 2 playsets of Jace 2. I'm a little too scared to go beyond that.

The problem with Jace 2.0 is that unlike my cards his price WILL drop drastically once he rotates out of Standard because he's too slow for Legacy AND Vintage. Which are the only formats that matter.

So while my collection will maintain it's price Jace 2.0 leaving standard will basically ruin his value.

You know he does see play in both right? Also, he won't lose TOO much because of extended. I doubt he'll drop below 40 until he rotates out of extended.

He sees play in bad decks. I'd much rather use Brainstorm, which for 1$ costs 2U less, is instant speed AND isn't a resource hog.

The thing is, Jace 2.0 sucks in the only formats that really matter anymore therefore he's not worth anything to me. And yeah, 40 sounds about right for what he'll be worth until he rotates out of Extended. But notice that's a 40$ dollar drop because of a set rotation, pretty sure most of my cards will retain the value they're at (mostly because they've either A. Already suffered that horrible deflation or B. Are excellent EDH cards)

Well, it's not like it's hard to trade them off before they drop anyway.

At least my single Tabernacle isn't going to drop any time soon.

Why do you keep saying Legacy and Vintage are the 'only formats that matter'? It's obvious that they're the 'eternal' formats, but there are just as many (more, actually) that play Standard and Extended than those two. In addition, it's increasingly difficult for new players to enter the Vintage and Legacy (especially Vintage) scene because of the ridiculous prices that are only increasing with time because of the Restricted List. I'm not as familiar with Legacy's standing as I am with Vintage, but from what I've seen its growth has been stunted greatly recently. Are you saying they're the only formats that matter in terms of money, or in some other way too?

Alas, poor Yorick.

He's basically saying that those are the only 2 formats that are even remotely interesting, and honestly, I agree. Standard is boring as all hell right now and Extended (At least the current one)is a completely retarded format anyway.

Sounds about right, I was just wondering. Standard is horrific and I didn't even keep up with the New Extended rules / rotations.

Alas, poor Yorick.

Basically, yeah.

I lost all interest in Standard long ago, and Extended with the new grapeed rotation.

And actually, even Legacy is getting fairly stale, and I'm starting to only like EDH

Extended, usually, is just Type 2.5. A good number of the decks viable in Standard are just as good in Extended. Sometimes moreso because they have access to more toys than usual.

Legacy and Vintage are basically the same format, to be honest. Sure, Vintage allows for the use of the Power 9 and a ton of other things (Oath, Minds Desire, etc), but you strip away the banlist in Legacy, and all you've got is Vintage, in a nutshell.

On topic; while building a deck with the best cards available usually makes the deck worth more, you can build a deck just as great without spending an arm and a leg. Back in Mirrordin/Onslaught, White Weenie (one of the best decks to counter Goblins back then) could be built (effectively) for less than 60 bucks. The most expensive things coming from Skullclamps and Wrath of God. The rest of the deck could actually be built by just buying the White Weenie structure deck, as it contained most of the cards you needed (Knights, Wing Shards, etc).

Now the 2 sets of Jace 2.0, you might as well sell. As Lyst touched on, he's really not that good in the older formats, as he's considerably slower and not as reliable at times. And his price will start to dwindle as you get closer to "Action" (the codename for the 3rd set in the block) because everyone will get rid of him to ready for the new block in September. The worse that could happen is he gets reprinted in Magic 2012 (doubtful) which'll drive down his price and make it easier to buy him back, if you intend to use him.
