A message of accountability

Members of etc, you know I care about each and every one of you. I admire your passion and respect your opinions. I'm constantly impressed by your drive to improve and your deck suggestions. You constantly make me laugh and I can honestly say that I genuinely care about all of you, even if our perspectives dont always align.

However, something needs to be said to all of us as a collective group. I dont care what color your tag is. Gold, black, and everything in between, this message is for all of us.

For too long have we used the staff and the "etc structure" as a scapegoat for our lack of accountability. Are we really convinced that changing the look of the deck subforum is going to bring back activity? What about staff? We can propose all of the changes we want, and implement them (I'll revisit this later), but we have tried this countless times in the past and they've lasted maybe a week.

The problem is that we all want to blame the others, but we dont want to own up to our own responsibility. We all have a responsibility as members to keep this forum alive and active, and right now, only a few select people are holding their end of the bargain.

We all need to make contributions. The more topics we post, the more posts we make, the more activity we generate. Its as simple as that. No amount of layout changes will bring people to etc. The thing that people want to see is an abundance of activity. They see an abundance of activity when they see dozens of unread topics every time they come to the forum. Now, I've noticed a few people who are striving to post an abundance of topics, and I appreciate what you have done recently. As for the rest of us, we have to become our accountable for our responsibility to the forum.

Now, as for staff accountability, there are a lot of discussions in the lounge in concerns to what changes to be made. I would ask that you give your opinion as well. Forum feedback is one of the best sections in etc in terms of conceptually sound subforums, but it has become nothing more than a place where joke topics and whine posts reside. Hardly anymore are there legitimate ideas posted in that section, and its rather unsettling. I posted a topic a few days ago in forum feedback, and its only gotten a couple of replies, none of which were really noteworthy. I clearly asked for help in the online section, and what we as players would like to see, and nobody came to aid.

Now maybe (and hopefully) I'm mistaken on this, but I feel like everyone is pissed about how no new ideas are being implemented, and willing to criticize the staff for it. What people need to realize is that we as a staff are not responsible for coming up with the ideas. That is just as much your job as it is mine. The staff is simply here to enforce forum rules and implement YOUR changes.

Etc means something to each and every one of us. For some of us, we've been coming here and been regular contributors for as long as seven years. We all have to make a commitment to activity, regardless of what layout it is, regardless of what the staff is or isnt doing, and regardless of what you feel the direction is etc is.

In conclusion, we all need to realize that if we want etc to survive, it is our responsibility. Again, I dont care what color your tag is. We are all members. We are all idea creators. We are all topic posters. We are all contributors. We need to live up to that.

I think you're right, but I see one major flaw.

"Now maybe (and hopefully) I'm mistaken on this, but I feel like everyone is pissed about how no new ideas are being implemented, and willing to criticize the staff for it. What people need to realize is that we as a staff are not responsible for coming up with the ideas. That is just as much your job as it is mine. As much as we would like to do this, we simply cannot. In the very recent past there have been numerous examples of member-backed ideas that could have easily taken hold with staff implementation, but when the time came the staff turned right around and dismissed the ideas entirely and effectively said "We'll just do it our way."

And I'll be the first to admit that this has been a recent weakness of our current staff regime. I cannot speak for everyone else, but I for one have been trying to improve our overall image of this as of late. I've tried contacting reds and getting some of the changes rolling, but I've been busier than normal lately, so even when I have seemingly gotten things going, I've had to back off to study or work.

That being said, we all have pm'ing abilities. Each and every member has the power to remind a staff member of ideas that have had ample backing. Accountability by all, for everything. Just because you dont have powers yourself, doesnt mean you dont have any power over the boards. You should know that better than most.

Lol I've been saying the 5th paragraph for how long?

I personally don't post/contribute to etc anymore, and I can clearly see why other members dont do the same. Oh well, I saw this coming. You had your chance a few months ago when there were loads of members lined up to do something.

I don't just mean that they forgot to do it were lazy implementing it, I'm saying they dismissed the ideas altogether and went an entirely different route that no one outside of the staff supported.

then demand an explanation. I know that I, personally, make a point to explain my perspective every time I have a problem with any ideas. That being said, I cant think of any recent suggestions that I didnt voice an opinion against and not give an explanation for. Those that I supported, I still explained my perspective. So please give an example that I was involved in that backs up your statement.

Most of the guys that blame the Staff and think the plum they're spewing usually don't know what they're talking about. For the most part, anyways.

I mean, come on, this Pat guy immediately starts blaming the Staff again.

nah, that will only cause drama.

If you honestly think that you're putting forth effort and making topics/contributions, then thats all anyone can ask of you.

Okay then how about we stop talking about stuff and just do it. Bickering between one another is exactly what the MAIN problem is, not what is said above. Cohesion and cooperation is what is needed now. Less talk, more rock!

Who is with me?

Well this, and the fact that people (not just on here, but in general) often seem to enjoy complaining, expecting & of course blaming a lot more than actual doing, or even contributing for that matter.

I know Drew pretty much hit this right on, but YugiohETC clearly mean something to us all, and it's ultimately a forum that we come to for a reason. We talk about the game & its many tribulations, and we do what we can to apply the positive aspects that we've assimilated to our lives. You know, what with our site being a social gaming community, not some sort of imperial microcosm. I think that among other things, this is also something we tend to forget through our travels.

I'm not sure if I'm out of place by speaking here since I am a very new member compared to the lot of you, but I enjoy this forum tremendously. It's the only forum that I am a member of. I post as much as I can, even after getting neg repped for saying "nice deck", and I try to post thoughts on as many peoples posts as I can even if it is as simple as "nice job" or "I concur with the former comment" just to keep a post generating some sort of motion. I would say that about 98.4% of threads that I have started have received as least one reply, and every ruling I ask for assistance with is adjudicated by people whose opinion I have come to trust, appreciate and even "expect" here on this site. I guess I don't see any major problem here. Maybe it's because I've gotten used to a certain group of individuals communicating with me on such a regular basis that I don't notice what is "going wrong". Admittedly, I know very little about the site, unless it is the Yug General Discussion, Deck and Specific Card Ruling subforums, but I have no problems with the layout and find very little wrong with the part(s) of the site I frequent. I guess this can be viewed as a general member stating his content status with ETC as juxtaposition to the thoughts so far.

P.S. Thanks to everyone who has spared a second to help, and also to those who handle those of us who aren't part of your personal circles with your thoughts and time.
