Would it be a good idea to make a deck with artifact and lands only? If you could make this work, how would you build it?

Any specific format or just casual?

Well, I like the Vintage format, but casual is also good.

I remember making a really bad blue/back deck that I thought was good a while back, featuring Sphinx Summoners, Tidehollow Strix, and a couple of other "Artifact friendly" cards. Well, I think it moreso had to do with the fact that I had no idea how to play, rather than the concept itself being all that bad, but yeah.

In Standard or Extended, you need a reason to not play a Tempered Steel deck and in Legacy, you need a reason not play a set of Thoughtcast and I won't even touch Vintage.

In standard, I play a deck with only 10 cards not being artifacts or lands(Sideboard not included, haven't gotten one set up yet.) so you can mess around with that, but i don't know what I'd do anywhere else.

Creatures: 27
4 Glint Hawk

4 Memnite
4 Signal Pest
4 Vault Skirge
4 Porcelain Legionnaire
3 Ornithopter
3 Phyrexian Revoker
1 Hex Parasite

Non-Creature Spells: 14
4 Tempered Steel
2 Dispatch

4 Glint Hawk Idol
3 Mox Opal
1 Chimeric Mass

Lands: 19
16 Plains
3 Contested War Zone

You don't get anything special for only running Artifacts though, so there's really little to no benefit in not splashing at least a little color. The closest you're gonna get would be Stax or Metalworker.

Alas, poor Yorick.

If you want to play vintage

Prepare to play the same deck everytime.

Vintage quite literally has ONE deck to play.

And it quite literally is probably near at least 9000 to play properly.

I wish I were joking.

Any and all of them because if you're playing Vintage you have Power Nine in it + a bunch of other really expensive stuff with about 5 cards different depending on which "deck" you're running.

Eh, it's a little more than that. Vintage is split up into 4 different types of decks usually: Blue based control, Null Rod Aggro variants, Ritual Combo, and Bazaar Combo.

Most decks are only off each other by maybe 20-30 cards.

I'm not sure I'd give it 20, that's like high end anti-meta stuff right there

Vintage is actually quite varied in terms of archetypes of decks. Like Kirin said, you've got a good selection of types of decks to choose from (more than the standard Aggro, Control, Combo, Midrange. Especially if you count Workshop based decks that pop up in Vintage from time to time). While each deck in these archetypes are likely very similar, you're not gonna find much similarity between decks of different archetypes.

Oath may be similar to Tezz, but it's nothing like GW Beats or Fish, which are nothing like ANT or TPS, which are nothing like Stax, which is NOTHING like Dredge (nothing in MTG is anything like Dredge, though).

Yeah, they all try to fit in as much of the power 9 as humanly possible and other cards like Bob, Tinker, Force of Will, Time Vault, Brainstorm, Ponder, and Top are all very common in many of the decks.. they're still quite different. It's an interesting (and expensive) format, to be sure.

Alas, poor Yorick.

If 50% or more of your deck is similar to every other deck...

I wouldn't call that variety.

50% of a deck is 30 cards. which is quite a lot (and a lot more than you claimed earlier) and probably still an understatement.

Oath
Spoiler

Tezz
Spoiler

Dredge
Spoiler

GW Beatz
Spoiler

Noble Fish
Spoiler

--------

Looking at the maindecks from each:

Cards in common:

Oath & Tezz: 41 (admittedly, a lot. these two are the same archetype of deck)
Oath & Dredge: 0
Oath & GW Beatz: 0
Oath & Noble Fish: 18

Don't feel like doing the rest for now, and these lists are just random so numbers could easily be off (where are the Black Lotus, idk?). It's just to show that archetypes of decks are similar (in the way that CawBlade and DarkBlade are very similar. or certain types of ygo decks I guess) but the format as a whole is quite diverse. And still, even if only 30 cards were different in each deck it would be more diverse than Yugioh (as each deck only has 40 cards initially).

Alas, poor Yorick.

The sad thing is, any of those decks that you didn't put the P9 in isn't actually proper vintage.

Vintage Dredge plays no power anyway. No point having unneeded cards showing up when you try to combo out.

Meh, the point is that no matter what deck you're playing, Vintage is expensive as balls
