So, although I am 09 member, I got no idea about old ETC because I wasn't active. Anyway, I've seen it a lot, the posts of "today's ETC is nothing like old ETC" or "Where is the old ETC"...etc.

Someone enlighten me about the differences and what did old ETC got that we don't have right now. I care to know because having 900 guest and 15 members online is kinda weird but that's not the subject, though.

It's honestly not worth the time and you're starting a plumstorm you want no part of.

Take the site for what it is. I know you're curious, but take the situation at face value.

While I'm not gonna disagree that it was better, a lot of people have some thick nostalgia glasses on.

What it really comes down to is that it was a lot more active back then and warring was a big thing (and that died away in almost all of the YGO forums)

Then why people didn't stop saying the aforementioned quotes if that's the way it should be? Also, my bad, the title should be old etc & new etc not "vs" since it might imply some plumstorm between veterans and kinda-new members.

Stop changing your god damned username every five minutes.

"Old ETC" is the nostalgic haven some of the older members have fond memories of, and it's pretty safe to say that a lot has changed since then. I joined after the change was in full swing, but I could see the results.

Now, my "Old ETC" was the ETC of warring. Clan games and whatnot, were the defining part of online yugioh culture. Every site worth a grape had a war section - and an active one.

I'll be the first to say (and likely only), I prefer ETC as it is now (a semi-small userbase of people who know one another fairly well) than how it once was (a lot of people who don't know or like one another). The trade off is that we lose what was easily my favorite part of ETC - the war section. When the user base is small, clan wars become non-existent. There's no point in a war section when you've only got enough for 3-4 teams, and only 6-7 people will actively play. I don't like that trade-off.

Tl;Dr -ETC would be my dream version if we had a small member boost (~20% of active members) who quickly made friends and connections and became a part of ETC culture, the current members increased their activity, and the war section magically sprung to life. Oh, and Canti and I reformed Omertà.

Won't happen.

Because we (the '03/'04/some '05 members) used to get into childish pissing contests with the newer members at the time around 2008-2009 about who was better, who was the "cancer killing ETC" - childish 4chan stuff like that.

I think Ira sums it up well from a prospective of someone who used to suck as a poster and is now a pretty good one.

It is kind of a reality on every online community actually. There will always be veterans who look down on the newer members as though it was their birthright. While I personally think that is childish, I can't deny that after being here for 7 years, I still miss the old etc because nearly every section was active. I made a lot of friends in nearly every part of this community, such as the Graphics or Gaming sections. Sadly, many of these people are gone now. Now there are newer members who do not possess such fond memories of ETC's past, but that doesn't mean that they can't positively contribute. Yet, you might wonder, why do some people like myself still stick around, even if the community they once revered is now a distant memory? I guess the answer to that is I still consider ETC to be "home" in a certain sense. This was the first online community that I got myself involved in, social networking be damned. Even if it isn't the same, it is still where I began, so I will always hold a certain amount of respect for it.

Well I can state as a fact its more mature lately, but I guess everyone needed a moment of glory translate ego, back in the past ,to show that they exist , so it was beneficial in the long run.

>Beneficial in the long run
>ETC went from a notable YGO site full of competitive activity to a barren "close-knit" community that really doesn't offer anything to the table
>ETC has slipped behind YF, TCGPlayer, and Pojo

I'm not trying to start plum, but I'm making pretty accurate assumptions.

I'm "old" but not old enough to be considered a "vet" but I'll throw my opinion out here.

I thought from mid to end of 2007 was pretty hilarious. I was new but I consider that the funniest and the last time ETC was "good" before it went into the plumfest of 08/09. Fights between various new members, activity of the old charismatic ones, the fact that 20 people would be posting and viewing a topic at 2 AM. It was all activity for me. There's more to say but I'll keep it at that.

Point is, back then there were a decent amount of diverse, charismatic, active and distinguished posters that made the forums fun and interesting, for better or worse. However, they all left. Now, I don't see any of that (besides a few members). I dunno if it's solely the activity anymore, rather than a lack of standouts.

I can't comment on the yugioh bit because I never actually participated in the yugioh sections when I joined.

really boils down to "more active members." even if i joined during a point in the decline, there were still more active members then than now. we had a nice graphics section, a cool warring section, i remember kotsin, sage, nerve (i knew him as nerve, though he went by dzdx before i joined, apparently) and jules were blue named, hayato, wit, and steve were green, achilles and haruhara were red, blitz was just a member, mr etc was JustinConnor, DWT posted, and i actually joined a war once and got wrecked on by someone from dgz.

between then and now RyanTLD came back and i had no idea who he was but everyone was like "omg ryan is back" and that was the type of community it was, even if i barely posted i sort of knew people like mysticflames (black flames assassin at one point lol) and they knew of people, and it was fun times.

now we have less active members, the standouts to me being ira, pc, and nomad being the most active, and people like krizz and apollo and achilles post but are busy.

i usually never post nostalgia but whatever lol. That's not even "old etc" though.

oop

BY THE WAY ira, you said you'd be the best vergil in marvel. how is that coming along

To make an extremely long story short, we had a billion times more activity, a much more closely-knit community, relevance in the Yu-Gi-Oh competitive scene, good staff members at some points, and the site was overall more enjoyable to use. It's become a wasteland compared to what it once was, and it's not even worth talking about for the most part. ETC has been "dead" compared to its glory days for close to two years now.

The Archives, the last vestiges of a fragment of ancient ETC history. Also a reminder of how immature I was back then and still am.

Any any point, 2003, 2006, 2008, 2011, now, in the droid filled future, this forum will always be a place to meet new people and to grow. It is to the people operating it now to inspire, innovate and motivate the current population and make a history of their own. Time passes, faces change, but the fundamental basics of the wisdom of this site shall always remain.
