a buddy of mine is telling me that gachi gachi gantetsu cannot use his effect to prevent his destruction if a mass destruction card like dark hole, torrential tribute, black rose dragon etc. is activated because he states it is an endless loop. is this correct?

Incorrect, there is no infinite loop involved in this situation.

Dark Hole and Torrential Tribute attempt to destroy all monsters on the field exactly once. If any monsters have some sort of protective effects, such as Gachi Gachi Gantetsu or a six samurai monster equipped with say, Legendary Ebon Steed, then their respective protective effects prevent destruction. In other words, the player controlling Gachi Gachi Gantetsu would simply detach one of its materials instead of destroying it as Dark Hole or Torrential Tribute resolves. Neither of the destroying cards attempts to destroy Gachi Gachi Gantetsu or any other monsters if they somehow remained on the field.
